Comprehension Programs
In general, children in Cusco are not accustomed to reading for pleasure as school only requires them to read the texts necessary for their school work. However, for some beginning in 5th grade, and for others a little further along, they suddenly have to read books of length and find themselves unprepared.
To ease children into reading for comprehension and enjoyment three comprehension programs have been developed -- Ya Leemos (We Can Now Read), Estamos Leyendo (We Are Reading), and the most recent program Dentro Del Libro (In the Book).
NextEach program is defined in regards to a child’s reading level and not by the child’s age. All children are encouraged to participate in a reading comprehension program but are in no way obligated. The programs are guided, paced, and controlled. To date there are over 50 children participating, voluntarily, in one of the 3 programs. We continually invite other children to join. Now it is so wonderful to see children’s enjoyment of reading growing as their comprehension improves.
- Ya Leemos is an introductory program for children who are recently reading. It includes approximately forty books, fiction and non-fiction titles, arranged by reading levels. At the conclusion of each book, the child gives a summary and answers three questions. This program, based on a child’s reading level, can include children from age 7 through 12.
