Our Members – The Children
La Pagina en la Puerta welcomes any and all children from age 6 through 17 unaccompanied by an adult. Children under 6 are also quite welcome as long as they come with an adult who can share the joy of reading with them.
Most of the children that come to the library live within walking distance from the library. Some of the children that come live a 5 minute bus ride away and others come all the way from the Cusco center -- about a half an hour bus ride for them.
The majority of the children come from lower income families and there is a small number from middle income families. Many of the children live in single parent homes, or with relatives other than their parents. Some of the children have to work in order to help supplement their family’s income.
Each afternoon the children rush in enthusiastically to pick up where they left off in a story, begin a new one, or share what is now an old
favorite with a friend. They love to share riddle books and tongue twisters. They greatly enjoy several of our kid friendly encyclopedia series, with bright pictures and photographs.
Clifford the dog continues to be one of the favorites among the children regardless of age. The Magic Tree House and Junie B. Jones series are favorite chapter books. The children are inspired by our collection of Peruvian stories.
The best part is that these children come to the library on their own volition – no one and nothing obligates them to come. To see such gusto for reading is a complete joy.
