The Reading Room...
... is where the majority of the library’s books, thanks to generous donations, are kept. The majority of the titles are in Spanish, some are in Quechua, and there is a section of books in English. Many of the books in Spanish are translated from English, but thankfully La Pagina en La Puerta also has a wonderful collection of books written originally in Spanish.
The library’s biggest pride is the growing number of books that are written by Peruvian authors and that take place in Peru. These are shelved in a separate section and include all of the Quechua – the language of the Inca -- titles. The library also has a large selection of reference books, biographies, science books, and other non-fiction books of interest.
Fiction books are in one section, organized and coded with stickers by reading level and within
Nexteach level the books are alphabetized by title. This makes it easier for each child to find a book that is to her liking and appropriate to her reading level.
In another section the non-fiction books are set up by content area – Peru, science, Encyclopedias, autobiographies and biographies, etc...
There are small tables and benches for the children to sit comfortably and read and share books together. There are reference posters on all the walls that are colorful and text-rich with useful information for the children.
