What is wanted more than anything for these children is for each child to develop a passion for reading, and enjoying a good story just for the sake of that enjoyment from as early an age as possible.
The hope is that through literature the children learn to appreciate themselves, and the stories that he or she has within his or her own soul. Mostly, the idea behind a library in Cusco is to have a place where children can develop and appreciate themselves while having a good time.
How often do children come?
Of the children who have come to La Pagina en la Puerta, some have only come one time, while there are others who come daily. Some children come once a week or once a month. Others only come once in a while. Most important is that each child knows that he is welcome to come whenever he wants.
Parent participation…
Every effort is made to involve parents, by having them fill out an inscription form or inviting them to read with their children. However, other than permitting their children to come – which is a great thing, very few parents have the time to come to the library. Of the children who have come through the library’s doors, less than 10 parents have accompanied them.
More than a library…
For many of the children, the library is like a refuge – a place to come to for an hour or so and feel safe, nurtured, looked after, and loved. It is a place where each child builds their inner confidence and realizes that they are great. It is a place where they smile and can be themselves.
