Why is there only one La Pagina en la Puerta library?
The library is very personal to Amy Bakal. She didn’t just put a place for children to come to read but is a part of it. Not only is it in her neighborhood, but only 3 doors from her home. Ms. Bakal is at the library and very involved with the children. She reads with them and to them. Children read to her.
Whether at the library or just around the neighborhood, she is involved with the children. Ms. Bakal enjoys just saying hello or having a conversation with them. Her involvement in the library is more than just providing books. It is the interaction, the sharing of the books, and the bringing of each child into the world of literature.
How do you get children to buy into reading?
At La Pagina en la Puerta the children are offered a wide range of reading materials in fiction and non-fiction at all reading levels. There are board books for the very young. Children just embarking on reading can choose from picture books with large colorful drawings and large print. There are chapter books of all levels. And there are books of all kinds for all of the levels in between.
Reference books, biographies, science books, and a large number of textbooks and dictionaries are available to help those doing homework. Bilingual books in English and Spanish; and books in Quechua for our Quechua speakers can be found on the shelves. The library’s pride is the large collection of Peruvian books. The atmosphere is friendly, welcoming, and nurturing with teachers and volunteers to help and guide the children with their reading.
