Health and Medical
Certain vaccinations for a safe visit while in Cusco and Peru are Hepatitis A and B, Typhoid Fever and Yellow Fever (mandatory if you decide to travel to the jungle). It is a good idea to contact or make an appointment with your doctor or Center for Disease Control to determine which vaccinations and medications will be necessary for your visit and for working with children. Some vaccines can take months to become active so please consult your doctor at the earliest possible opportunity.
Tourist Visa:
On arrival at Lima International Airport residents from most countries will automatically be given a
free tourist Visa valid for anywhere from 15 to 90 days. Before leaving the immigration counter, please make sure that you have been given the sufficient number of days to cover your stay in Peru. Please check with the Peruvian Embassy to ensure residents from your country are automatically given a Visa on arrival and what to do if you need to apply for a visa.
Getting Ready and Packing
Many people as they are getting ready for visiting Cusco have in mind that they are coming south of the equator to South America and that it is going to be hot. As Cusco is high in the Andes, you need to be prepared for cool weather – not the beach.
The best way to pack is to bring clothing that can be layered. You can count on the mornings and the nights being cold to the point where you might need a hat and gloves. However the days can be quite warm. Have t-shirts (long and short sleeved) and shorts, pants, and sweatshirts or sweaters. Pack a warm jacket. If you are coming in the rainy season (mid November through mid April) bring raingear (it’s always a good idea to have at least a rain poncho with you). As far as footwear, it should be comfortable and easy to walk in. If you plan on hiking, pack hiking boots. Bring a pair of sandals as well.
